Branching plays a role in the functional properties of materials, such as adhesive properties or digestibility. We will demonstrate in-depth characterisation of branching in pol(acrylic acid): quantification of the average degree of branching by NMR spectroscopy and assessment of its heterogeneity by capillary electrophoresis in the critical conditions.[1,2] Branching in starch governs its semi-crystalline structure, typically characterised by X-ray diffraction. The variety of its branching structures is demonstrated by capillary electrophoresis. In both cases, the assessment of solubility by NMR yielded unexpected results.
We will also illustrate the potential of solid-state NMR to assess the miscibility in polymer blends used in water filtration membranes.
