Volatile Organic Compound

Vesicle

Aggregates in solution of amphiphilic compounds with the structure of a hollow sphere, in which a part of solution is enclosed
The membrane separating the inner and outer solutions is made of a bilayer of small molecules amphiphilic.

Surfactant

Blend word of Surface Active Agent
Surfactant is a compound (often amphiphilic) which easily adsorbs on interfaces between air and water, solid and water, etc…
This adsorption induces a decrease of the surface tension of the interface.

Supercritical CO2

Supercritical carbon dioxide is a particular state of CO2 above the critical point where it has an intermediate behavior between that of a liquid and a gas.

Self-organizing system

System in which elemental bricks (molecules, polymers, particles etc…) spontaneously organize themselves into various architectures

RAFT

Reversible Addition-Fragmentation chain Transfer (or RAFT) is a polymerization technique often leading to well defined and controlled macromolecules.

Polymer

Large molecule, also called macromolecule, made of many repeated subunits

Micelle

Aggregates in solution of amphiphilic compounds with an approximately spherical shape
When made of surfactants, fast exchange exists between the micelle and free compounds dissolved in the solution. When made of polymers, the micelle is often “frozen”, meaning that the exchange is very slow or null.

Liquid crystals

Matter of state with properties between those of liquids and solids
The organization of the liquid crystal may depend on the temperature (in the case of thermotropic liquid crystals) or on concentration (in the case of lyotropic liquid crystals, which are a mixture of solvent and surfactant).

Hybrid nanoparticle

Inorganic nanoparticle coated by organic materials, such as polymers

Gel

Jelly-like material, which is often obtained by a dispersion of molecules or particles in a solvent
The formation of a 3D network within the solvent explains the gelification of the mixtures.

Emulsion

Mixture of two immiscible liquids, one liquid being dispersed in the other one

Colloid

Particles or objects having an average size between approximately one nanometer and one micrometer
Dispersed in a solvent, it leads to a colloidal solution, more or less stable depending on the interactions existing between the particles or objects.

Aptamer

Oligonucleotide (i.e. small DNA, RNA…) or peptide that is able to bind specific target molecules

Amphiphile

Compound made of hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts
